Values in Business
Guest: Robert L. Merz, M.A.
Business owners and corporate decision-makers have values just like anyone else does. For better or for worse, commerce and industry are largely responsible for the state of the world in 2007. From the medication consumers need to the oil cars use, businesses are always there, behind the scenes or on the front page of the newspaper. So what are the values that businesses have? What does corporate America seek and prize? Are those values different than Americans' individual, private values? Are those goals and ends good or bad?
In his fifth show on business values and ethics, Jason questions Robert L. Merz, M.A., who has a relevant education and a lot of Fortune 500 experience. He also authored a book entitled: A Declaration of American Business Values: Ethics, Equity and Efficiency in the New Millennium.
Labor Law and Human Resources in Focus
Guest: Charles Krugel, Esq.
Jason did a show a few months ago with two cartoonists who draw about labor issues. Today, Jason is interviewing attorney Charles Krugel who has some experience representing unions as well as employers in labor and human resources issues. Labor and employment law and HR are relevant to corporate ethics and values; after all, they are ideally about the fair and legal treatment of employees individually and as a workforce. And, of course, employers are people too and deserve fair treatment and protection from unwarranted legal action.
Morality in Politics
Guests: Arianna Huffington and David Callahan, PhD.
Arianna Huffington and David Callahan, PhD bring their potent perspectives and remarkable biographies to bear on morality in politics. As the noteworthy author George Lakoff puts it, "David Callahan is right: Politics is based on morality, and the main division in America is between the Cares and the Care-Nots...." And always quotable, Arianna Huffington says: "There is a California we can live in where teachers are paid more than prison guards,...where the power stays on while the power of political money is turned off." Tune in to listen to what these no-nonsense thinkers have to say about modern politics - and what role morality plays in it.
Education for the Whole Child
Guests: Gaylin Osbourn and Patrice Maynard, M.Ed.
Mainstream, public education in America today is failing in at least two regards: children aren't learning the fundamentals well enough, and "extracurricular" activities such as art are being excised due to budgetary problems or ideological ignorance. Children who go to public schools are in trouble, but for those parents who are involved enough and wise enough, alternatives exist. However, private schools can range in quality from parochial to pathetic. Rudolf Steiner was an Austrian philosopher, literary scholar, architect, playwright, educator, social thinker and esotericist who lived in the late 20th century. One of his legacies is Waldorf education, a philosophy and practice of education that is kind of in the vein of Montessori schools. Jason is honored to have Patrice Maynard and Gaylin Osbourn on the program to speak about Waldorf education, including how children educated at Waldorf schools learn, how they excel, and what lessons society at large can take from their vast numbers of children educated and sent to college every year in America.
Modern Day Mental Health
Guests: Bruce E. Levine, PhD and Prof. Brenda LeFrancoise
Humankind has made incredible progress since the days of hunting and gathering. In fact, when one loses one's cellphone or when the refrigerator is on the fritz, it creates a sense of shocking modernity. Are we addicted to our items? Do we rely on drugs and entertainment at an alarming rate? Why are we sicker than when we had less freedom and riches? How many of us really seek the outer reaches of what we're capable of? Are the science of psychology and the discipline of psychiatry on the right track? Is modern reality really reality TV shows?

Labor Concerns and Divisions of Wealth
Guests: Gary Huck and Mike Konopacki
America's short history has shown remarkable growth, a distinct form of capitalism, and an unprecedented accumulation of wealth. However, as powerful and flush as America is, there are deep class divisions based on wealth and the ownership of business, and workers tend not to benefit as greatly from growth as the owners of the capital do. The history of America is really a history of how the ownership class and the working class relate. The American middle class is disappearing, and this must have consequences for the very fabric of our society. Jason is pleased to welcome two heralded observers of the labor struggle and American capitalism to the show, political cartoonists Gary Huck and Mike Konopacki.
A Progressive Perspective on American Economics
Guests: Jared Bernstein, PhD. and Edward S. Herman, PhD.
Unless you are quite wealthy, you probably feel an economic pinch: a job that is not keeping pace, a fair amount of debt, and insecurity about Social Security. The economic priorities of the Bush Administration and Congress are fairly plain to see. The road to fiscal propriety and a more progressive America are not rocket science, either. It comes down to priorities and discipline. Jason welcomes two guests with decades of combined experience watching the economy and all the factors that support it. Tune in and find out.
