Education for the Whole Child
Segment 1 | Mainstream, public education in America today is failing in at least two regards: children aren't learning the fundamentals well enough, and "extracurricular" activities such as art are being excised due to budgetary problems or ideological ignorance. Children who go to public schools are in trouble, but for those parents who are involved enough and wise enough, alternatives exist. However, private schools can range in quality from parochial to pathetic.    [^]

Segment 1 | Poverty, homelessness, lack of medical insurance coverage, and wage disparity are major problems for America. What ought each of us to do about them? What can we realistically do about them? What role should government be playing? Are there institutional and economic-policy reasons that so many of us are left out in the cold? Is this the kind of society we really want? Does our rising income disparity spell the end of the American dream for 95% of the people? Jason asks such questions of Rebecca Vilkomerson, Director for The California Partnership, a coalition of 60 organizations advocating for low-income families.    [^]
